Christian Convery Interview
Jesse Thank you for joining us today, Christian Convery, Say hi.
Christian Convery Hi!
Jesse We’re very excited to have you on Christian, we’re gonna go ahead and just jump right into it. Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself, Christian?
Christian Convery My name is Christian Convery. I’m an actor, and I live in Vancouver. I love playing sports, I love acting, and I love sour candies just like Gus.
Jesse I love sour candies, that’s also my favorite preference as well as my kids. Now, you’ve mentioned before that you also enjoy doing fun stuff. Like you love jokes and things like that, too. What’s one of your favorite jokes?
Christian Convery Oh, boy, I have so many. I just can’t choose. Oh, how about this, you tell me a joke.
Jesse Okay. I’ll tell you what. I’ll tell you the very first joke that my son told me. He told me how do you make handkerchief dance? He said you put a little boogie in it.
Christian Convery That’s funny.
Jesse Now, I have to ask, Are you secretly a superhero? Because at 11 you’re starring in one of the biggest series, and you’re starring in some of the most interesting movies that we’ve seen out there such as the tiger rising, and you also play guitar. How are you so talented?
Christian Convery I guess I just practice and work hard at everything I do, and I just think positively.
Jesse That’s the spirit. Now thinking positive is definitely a great way to get everything going out there, and the best way to move forward. Now speaking on big roles, you’ve landed a fantastic role as Gus, for one of the most popular comic series, in Sweet Tooth of course, and it’s being adapted into a series on the biggest streaming service with Netflix. How does it feel to have such an opportunity?
Christian Convery It’s such an honor to be on Netflix with my fellow castmates and how we got to film Sweet Tooth in majestic and beautiful New Zealand. I just thought filming in New Zealand and being on Netflix was just so majestic and just incredible the contrast of colors and biomes in New Zealand filming. That too, I really think that we put a lot of hard work, the production team and everyone who worked on the show for our viewers on Netflix, and all I have to say is that filming Sweet Tooth was such a blast like I got to do most of my own stunts I got to do so many rehearsals like with wire training, where I got attached to harnesses and go run in the air and getting to star as Gus Jeff Lemire’s comic run in 2009 was such an honor and I’m really happy that I got this opportunity.
Jesse That’s awesome. I mean, the trailer looks stunning. I know me and my family are very excited to watch it. My friends are super excited, we can’t wait to see it. It looks beautiful out there, the scenery like you were mentioning New Zealand. Stunning. So, we’re excited.
Jesse What can you tell us about Sweet Tooth? What are you most excited for the fans to see when the series actually comes out?
Christian Convery I hope that our fans on Netflix will see a whole new different type of plot to any other series you’ve ever seen. That’s about a virus that wipes out the planet and sends it spiraling into chaos, but hybrids which are part animal and part human emerged from that virus. We focus on one particular hybrid named Gus, who lives in the woods secluded with his father until he meets a wandering loner named Jepperd, and together, they will go out on an adventure, action, friendship in an action-packed series that is for the whole family, in search of a home, wanting answers and I really think that this show is going to be amazing for families to watch, too. Obviously, the younger ones will need some parental guidance, but I really like how they took a comic book that’s darker, I would say, made it into more of a family-friendly for everyone to watch, and that’s what I hope that my fans on Netflix and everyone who watches the show will take away from it is, hope and positivity and optimism during dark times like COVID. You can use that hope and optimism to get through those dark times. That’s what I really hope that fans will take away from the show.
Jesse That’s beautiful. Awesome, thank you.
Jesse Now walk us through how it came about that you got the role of the Gus. How is it that it all went down?
Christian Convery So the audition process was pretty long and kinda hard. So, it’s been It was like three months of calling everyone and flying to LA and back and doing plenty of audition callbacks, but let me tell you, it was so worth it because now I’m here talking to you and you guys are watching geek network about Sweet Tooth.
Jesse Have you had a chance to meet Robert Downey Jr.
Christian Convery Yes, I did get a chance to call Robert Downey Jr. I was so happy. And I felt like we had this connection that we’ve been friends for years, and Susan Downey was there too. I just was so excited because you know, he’s Iron Man.
Jesse Was that intimidating talking to such a big superhero?
Christian Convery Kinda? Because, you know, I’m a huge fan of the Marvel series and the Avengers. So yeah, it was really awesome talking to him.
Jesse Well, I totally get that. I know I was nervous just coming to talk to you as well because we’re already excited to see you in the show. So I feel like I totally get it.
Jesse Now speaking of Sweet Tooth and the Tiger Rising, how did it feel to be part of bringing these books onto the big screen?
Christian Convery Taking Jeff Lemire’s DC Comics Sweet Tooth and putting it on the big screen was such an amazing and new experience. Getting to play Gus who’s part deer and part boy was the coolest thing I’ve ever done basically, and getting to bring that alive, the comic book, like onto the big screen, I just feel so honored that I and my fellow castmates get to also just make everyone who watches it happier and just to excite them more. Putting all the hard work into it, everyone who worked on the team, I just feel so happy that you know, we did season one of Sweet Tooth and it turned out pretty well and I’m really happy for fans to see.
Jesse That’s awesome. I know, like I said we can’t get enough of watching the trailer. I think we’ve watched it a few times already.
Jesse Now, the trailer looks amazing. The fantasy world in there looks stunning. But I would like to know what the process from your perspective is. How is it filming these films and the TV shows, compared to when you actually see the finished project?
Christian Convery During filming, you’re still in New Zealand, you’re still in the magic wonder and beautiful nature of New Zealand filming that, and let me tell you some scenes like there’s a scene where I’m running across the mountain top, and I’m going all the way to this cliff edge with a 3000-foot drop. I actually did that with the utmost safety protocols, of course, but people say that it looks surreal that it’s fake, and we use the green screen, but no, that is just the magical, New Zealand right there and, sure, we have to use a green screen in a couple of scenes, but most of it was definitely outdoors. That’s what I really love about New Zealand, the contrast of colors between all the biomes and the mountain tops. That’s it felt so thrilling, I would say to just be there in the magic and seeing it all on the big screen.
Jesse That’s amazing. You have to work hard and see all the beautiful magic out there. I have to say that sounds really cool. So a follow-up question there.
Jesse How does it feel to see it all come together?
Christian Convery Seeing it all come together is just so exciting! Everyone who worked on the production of Sweet Tooth put all their hard work and effort into it, while at the same time having to follow COVID protocols and doing it so well. Just seeing that all come together was just so exciting and thrilling just to see it. I just feel so happy for everyone who worked on the show, just to see their hard work.
Jesse That’s awesome, and we’re very excited to for you to see that product to what’s been your favorite moment during the filming of Sweet Tooth.
Christian Convery Being in New Zealand, that is definitely my favorite moment, of filming Sweet Tooth, you know, the whole thing is my favorite moment, just being in New Zealand. Like I said in the magical wonder and the incredible views. Filming Sweet Tooth was such an honor and playing such a unique role like Gus, who’s part of the year and part human. I just, it was so exciting and such an amazing new experience that can’t wait until we preview season two with my fellow castmates.
Jesse Now is there like a movie or TV universe that you would like to play a role in like Star Wars or Marvel? Anything that you can see yourself wanting to get into?
Christian Convery Sure I would love to play a role in Marvel or Star Wars. But there’s one universe that I really just want to be in…
Jesse which one is that?
Christian Convery The Sweet Tooth universe!
Jesse Oh, there you go. That’s a good answer!
Christian Convery Being in the universe of Sweet Tooth is just so thrilling because you know, it’s so unique and incredible in the series, and that’s why I would definitely choose the Sweet Tooth series.
Jesse That’s a great answer.
Jesse We’re really looking forward to seeing all the hard work that you put into it. It looks amazing. We can’t say it enough. We’re excited. We can’t wait to see you on there, and thank you so much for coming on, and chatting with us a little bit.
Jesse Is there anything that you want to tell everybody?
Christian Convery Sweet Tooth is premiering on June 4. Go on Netflix and watch it!
Jesse There you go. People definitely catch Sweet Tooth. Christian, thank you so much for joining us here at Geek Network. Geek Responsibly.
Team Downey President Amanda Burrell had some words to share on Convery’s portrayal of Gus, saying:
“So much of who Gus is was inspired by Christian and his beautiful, nuanced, and hope-filled performance. He’s wise beyond his years but still has the intense curiosity and spirit of adventure of a child. He craved learning everything – about stunts, filmmaking, puppeteering, and especially soaking in all things New Zealand. On set he’s an absolute professional – hard working, kind, playful, and a constant reminder to have fun.”
Be sure to check out Sweet Tooth premiering tomorrow exclusively on Netflix.
