Ghostbusters Animated Series Being Developed for Netflix

Netflix is looking to expand the Ghostbusters franchise. The streamer is reportedly developing a new Ghostbusters animated series with Ghost Corps, Inc overseeing the production of the project. Variety reports that Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan will executive produce the new animated series. The two previously collaborated on the hit film Ghostbusters: Afterlife which Reitman directed from a script written by the duo.

No plot details have been revealed for the upcoming series but with Ghostbusters not having seen itself in animated form since the 1997 animated series Extreme Ghostbusters, this should be a welcome addition to the franchise especially if they are able to capture the magic of the 1986 animated series The Real Ghostbusters which featured the voices of the original film’s cast. With no writer attached to the project, plot details might not be out in the open for a while.

Tom Rothman, Sony chairman, also recently announced that they have more Ghostbusters sequels in the works, saying:

“Yes, we will. We have plenty of franchise universes with which to operate in, but since I have Deadline here, I want to say, and please include this, OK? Everyone will say, yeah you did $3 billion but it’s all sequels and superheroes. It was not all that.

There was Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and Little Women. This summer, we’ve got Bullet Train, from David Leitch, with Brad Pitt, a pure original, R-rated rock ‘em, sock ‘em action movie for grownups. And Where the Crawdads Sing, a big bestseller with an up-and-coming actress, Daisy Edgar Jones, for women. I absolutely believe that women will come back to the box office.”

It will be interesting how if any effect this will have on the animated series or the characters featured in it. There is also a Ghostbusters VR game in the works with a multiplayer game also coming to consoles and PC. With all the wheels spinning on the franchise, fans of the films should have no problem knowing who to call in the near future.

The Ghostbusters animated series does not have a release date but expect it to premiere exclusively on Netflix. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
