Sting Announces Upcoming Retirement from Professional Wrestling

Sting‘s retirement announcement on AEW Dynamite marks the end of an era for one of the most beloved professional wrestlers in the history of the business. After being forced into retirement in 2015 due to an injury, Sting made a triumphant return to action at AEW Revolution. Throughout the past six years, the 64-year-old icon has proven time and again why he is one of the best in the industry.

During his reflection on his career, Sting expressed gratitude for the memorable moments he shared with fellow legends such as Lex Luger, Dusty Rhodes, and Ric Flair. As he announced his final match, which will take place at AEW Revolution 2024 in March of next year, the crowd showered him with “thank you Sting!” chants.

“My very first match with AEW was Revolution 2021 and my very last match will be Revolution 2024,” Sting said. “The only thing for sure about Sting, about my retirement for 2024 is… for sure.”

Sting, whose real name is Steve Borden, has been a professional wrestler since 1985. Initially wrestling under the ring name Flash, he started his career in various promotions such as the Continental Wrestling Association and the Universal Wrestling Federation. However, it was in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) that he rose to prominence and became a renowned figure.

During his tenure in WCW, Sting became one of the promotion’s most popular and iconic wrestlers. He captivated audiences with his high-flying moves and shared the ring with some of the promotion’s most notable wrestlers such as Flair, Goldberg, and the nWo.

After WCW’s closure in 2001, Sting briefly ventured into Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) before making his way to the WWE in 2014.

While Sting’s retirement will undoubtedly be a loss for wrestling fans and the profession, there is no doubt that he has left an indelible mark on the industry. His 21 matches since his return have showcased his timeless charisma and fierce determination that has cemented him as one of the biggest icons in the sport. As the wrestling world bids farewell to this iconic figure, Sting will find much-deserved time outside of the ring to enjoy the fruits of his legendary career. He will be deeply missed, but his impact will continue to resonate for years to come.
