Masters of the Universe Film Possibly Headed to Amazon
Variety reports that after Netflix‘s rejection of a planned live-action Masters of the Universe film, the project may have found a new home with Amazon. Last summer, Netflix turned down the film after a reported $30 million had already been invested in its development. The budget concerns were one of the reasons for the streamer’s decision to not pursue the production of the film.

Masters of the Universe has been passed between studios since 2007, with Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures involved before it landed at Netflix. Now, Amazon is reportedly in “serious talks” to pick up the project through their MGM Studios. If the deal goes through, Kyle Allen is expected to continue playing He-Man, and Todd Black, the producer from Mattel, is determined to secure a significant theatrical release for the film. The budget, though slightly lower, is said to be around $170 million.
However, the deal is still “tenuous,” as it would require new agreements with the Nee brothers to direct the film and make revisions to the script. Additionally, navigating the complex rights to Masters of the Universe involves major companies like NBCUniversal, the owner of DreamWorks Animation, and Mattel. The red tape to get the film shifted could pose some delays or for a deal to fall through although, it’s not entirely impossible to make it happen.

Overall, the potential move to Amazon has revived hope for Masters of the Universe to finally make its way to the big screen. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
