League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Reboot Film Coming to Hulu
20th Century Studios and Hulu have announced their plans to reboot the popular comic book series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The film adaptation would be coming exclusively to Hulu when it releases. The film had a previous film adaptation in 2003 which Don Murphy produced. Murphy will return as a producer for the reboot adaptation alongside Susan Montford and Erwin Stoff.
Justin Haythe will be writing the screenplay for the film. He has penned previous films including Revolutionary Road and Red Sparrow. The script is set to be adapted directly from the 1999 comic book series created by Alan Moore with art by Kevin O’Neill. The comic series released four volumes before its run ended in 2019. The comic book series followed classic literature characters with a superhero twist. The comic series was previously adapted in the previously mentioned 2003 adaptation that starred Sean Connery as Allan Quatermain.
The description for the comic series reads:
“London, 1898. The Victorian Era draws to a close and the twentieth-century approaches. It is a time of great change and an age of stagnation, a period of chaste order and ignoble chaos. It is an era in need of champions. In this amazingly imaginative tale, literary figures from throughout time and various bodies of work are brought together to face any and all threats to Britain.
Allan Quatermain, Mina Murray, Captain Nemo, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and Edward Hyde and Hawley Griffin, the Invisible Man, form a remarkable legion of intellectual aptitude and physical prowess: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.”
The comic series created a captivating world using some of the most prominent literature characters including The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Mina Harker, and Dorian Gray. The previous film adaptation was loosely based on the first volume of the comic series, so seeing the reboot go back to the source material shows hope of the adaptation revisiting the elements of Victorian sci-fi fantasy to deliver what we hope will be a great rebooted film.
