I Am Legend Sequel in the Works with Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan
I am Legend is a film that still resonates with many fans. Blending the lines of post-apocalyptic survival and horror, the films gave an explosive entry into the genre with its unique plot points and Will Smith‘s stellar performance. Deadline is now reporting that a sequel is in the works with Smith set to return and he will be joined by another film icon, Michael B. Jordan.
The film was adapted from the Richard Matheson novel of the same name. Robert Neville (Smith) is the only human left in New York City after a failed cancer drug causes a deadly outbreak and turns the majority of the population into creatures called Darkseekers. No plot details on the sequel have been released.
This will be the first time Smith and Jordan share the big screen. Also returning will be Akiva Goldsman who will write the sequel and produce the film alongside Elizabeth Raposo and Jordan. Smith will also produce under his banner alongside Jon Mone.
Those who have seen the film might be wondering how Smith’s Neville would return in a sequel. The film’s theatrical ending saw Neville sacrifice himself to help Anna and Ethan escape with a sample of the cure he was able to create. This ending would make it near impossible for Neville to play a role in the sequel aside from flashbacks.
There is an alternate ending of the film in which Neville discovers that the creatures are so persistently attacking because his test subject is the Darkseekers leader’s significant other. After realizing this, Neville releases her, and then he accompanies Anna and Ethan to Vermont with the cure in hand.
As previously mentioned, no other details are known about the film but Smith did share a photo of the original film’s landscape not long after the announcement.
