Evil Dead Rise Review: A Bloody, Disgusting, Groovy Good Time
Evil Dead Rise had much hype coming into its theatrical release. With test screenings giving Warner Bros. confidence that the film could hold up against competitors in a theater run, the film saw itself pulled from an HBO Max release to a full-fledged cinema run which given the weekend results was the right move. The only downfall is it falling short of the tyrant that is the Super Mario Bros. Movie which has outlasted other films for three weeks running now and is headed to a $1B worldwide earnings.
Nobody predicted the video game adaptation to perform as well as it has but even so, Evil Dead Rise finds itself on the opposite spectrum of what you would call a family movie experience as kids should definitely be left at home unless you were a demented child such as me who continuously snuck into theaters to enjoy slasher films. Nonetheless, this is one of the most influential horror films that will release this year and was perfectly crafted in the new trend we see the Evil Dead franchise going with the gore-fest horror that will make you cringe no matter how desensitized you believe you are to the genre.
The film boasts 6,500 liters of fake blood with easter eggs and cameos that truly honor the franchise and even give nods to classic films such as The Shining. With the change of locale, they manage to stay true to the core features that make the secluded demonic possession horror a long-standing feature throughout the franchise.
Being able to take an entire building and make you feel secluded and trapped is an admirable task very reminiscent of the claustrophobic panic you feel watching a film such as Rec. The practical effects were perfectly captured to give us one of the most terrifying looks at deadites to date. In what could have easily been a cop-out move to use CGI, they stayed true to the practicality of the films by opting for classic effects.
