Voices That Count: Spanish Collection of Comics Shares Women’s Struggles & Stories of Empowerment In English For First Time At IDW

IDW Publishing is set to release the critically acclaimed Spanish collection of comics, Voices That Count in English for the first time. The anthology series brought together some of Spain’s most talented women to share their stories that encompass both struggles and triumphs in the lives of women. Each of these stories provides a message that matters from Voices That Count.

With a variety of experiences, the stories provided can resonate with a variety of readers of any gender as we touch on different realities that include “gender imbalance in the workplace — through a gender-flipped lens, and toxic beauty standards taking a toll on the body image of young girls.” each story giving these creators the space to use their voice.

The official description of Voices That Count reads:

“VOICES THAT COUNT is a collection of short comics that celebrates women. Printed in English for the first time, this Spanish collection highlights and uplifts women’s voices, collecting their stories of life, love, and empowerment. Interacting with everything from the realities of gender imbalance in the workplace—through a gender-flipped lens—to toxic beauty standards taking a toll on the body image of young girls, VOICES THAT COUNT gives women a space to recount their struggles and triumphs.”

Voices That Count collects nine stories from an all-female creative team that includes the best and brightest of Spain. The anthology series has cover art by Esther Gili and is translated by Diego Jourdan Pereira. The anthology contains the stories listed below:

  • Julio by Julia Otero and Ada Diez
  • 24 Hours by Lola Garcia and Agustina Guerrero
  • The Bug by Diana López Varela and Akira Pantsu
  • Empowered by Estefanía Molina and Ana Oncina
  • Loneliness by Eva Amaral and María Hesse
  • Sexier by Leticia Dolera and Raquel Riba Rossy
  • Turtle Steps by Sandra Sabatés and Sandra Cardona
  • Over a Banana Skirt by Almudena Grandes and Sara Herranz
  • Mzungu by Patricia Campos and Sara Soler

Speaking of the importance of the message provided in Voices That Count, Diez said:

“This comic shows the importance of an unconditionally supportive family environment, the necessity of the right educational groundwork as a feminist principle, and the key to fight for your dreams—understanding the importance of an individual’s independence, forgetting what’s been established by gender rules.”
