The Penguin Gets an Official Series Order at HBO Max
HBO Max has put in an official series order for The Batman spinoff series The Penguin. Following the success of Matt Reeve‘s The Batman, Colin Farrell has gotten the straight-to-series call to reprise his role from the film.
First announced back in September of last year, the series was said to bring a “Scarface-like” twist on Oswald Cobblepot’s time in the spotlight. Skip to December and Farell confirmed that he would be returning to the role for the spinoff series and now, after crushing it at the box office, HBO Max has greenlit the project and made it a reality.
“Scarface-like”
Lauren LeFranc is set to write the script for the series, and will also act as showrunner and executive produce. The series aims to take fans on a deep dive into the world and mind of one of Batman’s most renowned villains. Reeves is also attached to the series and will executive produce alongside Farell, Dylan Clark, Daniel Pipski, Rafi Crohn, and Adam Kassan.
The Batman has raked in an impressive $301M at the global box office so far and was praised by both critics and fans. Unfortunately, another spinoff that was in the works and had fans buzzing was the Gotham PD spinoff that Reeves just recently confirmed is on hold after a creative shift saw it being adapted into a series focusing on Arkham Asylum.
