Superman Flies Into New Era in 2023 [NYCC]
DC Comics announced during New York Comic-Con the new direction the Superman comics line will be flying to in 2023. The iconic hero is set to enter a new era during the year that will celebrate 85 years of the Kryptonian. To celebrate this milestone, the publisher looks to usher in this new era that will include a new monthly series featuring Kal-El with writer Joshua Williamson and artist Jamal Campbell which hits comic book shelves this February.
The panel revealed that Superman will be following up on his return to Earth from Warworld and will look to return to his family and his duties as Superman. Lex Luthor now behind bars opens up the possibility of new enemies and threats to confront the hero.
With Kal-El returning, those who have enjoyed the epic run of his son Jon’s run as Superman do not need to worry as Tom Taylor and Clayton Henry will be continuing their run of Superman: Son of Kal-El in a brand-new limited series titled Adventures of Superman which will see Jon face off against Ultraman and also bring Earth-2’s Superman into the fold.
Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks introduced the world to the son of Lois and Clark in 2015 and they will reunite to pen a story for Jon titled Lois and Clark 2: Doom Rising which will focus on Jon’s younger years as Lois and Clark lived on their farm in anonymity before the events that occurred in the 2017 run of Superman Reborn.
Last but certainly not least, Kal-El will also be featured within the pages of Action Comics beginning with January’s Action Comics #1051 from writer Philip Kennedy Johnson. Power Girl will also be reintroduced to the DC universe with writer Leah Williams and artist Marguerite Sauvage creating a three-part story that will serve as a spinoff of the crossover event Lazarus Planet.
In the press release, Taylor shares his excitement for Jon’s continued spotlight in a new series, saying:
“I couldn’t be more excited for Jon Kent to headline the iconic Adventures of Superman. It’s a real testament to the fantastic response of fans to Jon as Superman. This series is going to be one of the most action-packed books I’ve ever written and Jon is going to be tested more than ever before.
While we can tell you the Superman of Earth-2, Val-Zod, and Jon’s nemesis, Ultraman, will be key characters in the early part of Adventures of Superman, what we’re going to reveal at the end of issue #2 will have everyone talking and issue #3 launches us in a direction that no one will see coming.”
Williamson also shares the honor felt to be creating the flagship series, saying:
“After the darkness of the last year in the DCU, there is no character better suited to lead DC into the light than Superman. “It’s an understatement to say I’m honored to be writing DC’s flagship series.
I’m very excited to take Clark Kent on a fun, pulp style adventure in Metropolis against his greatest villains. We’re also going to be introducing new concepts and new challenges for the Man of Steel and to be doing it with wonderful partners like Jamal Campbell and Nick Dragotta is a dream come true. Every page explodes with awesome energy. The Superman line that Tom, Phillip and I are putting together with DC is going to lead the way for an exciting 2023.”
The future is bright for Superman as his family is at the forefront with many new adventures underway by some of the comic book industry’s biggest talent. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
