SUBGENRE Brings a Mind-bending Story From Bang! Creators Matt Kindt and Wilfredo Torres

Dark Horse Comics has announced a brand new series titled SUBGENRE. The new series comes from Bang! creators Matt Kindt and Wilfredo Torres as the newest series from Flux House Books. This story will deliver a mind-bending story spanning many dimensions as a murder mystery unfolds and crosses through Kindt’s previous books and all of the fiction genre itself.  

Kindt and Torres are joined by colorist Bill Crabtree. The debut issue features a variant cover by artist Brian Hurtt and the series will be released in a pulp magazine-sized format.

Dark Horse’s description of SUBGENRE reads: 

A man is living two lives. He is a private detective in a dystopian cyberpunk future trying to solve a triple murder. But when he falls asleep–he wakes up as a wandering adventurer in a barbaric fantasy world where magic exists. Is he two separate people? Or is he a third person that has undergone a psychotic split? Who is he really? And who is the murderer? But the biggest question is, can he merge these realities without losing himself?

On Subgenre, Kindt said

“I wrote the most dense script of my career in an effort to get every idea I’ve ever had about identity, writing, genre, and fiction into one big murder mystery. I owe Wilfredo many, many dinners.”

Kindt has delivered nothing short of master-class work and his partnership with Dark Horse has treated us to some of the best and most thought-provoking indie comics to date. Not to mention he writes a comic about an immortal mercenary with the breathtaking Keanu Reeves. Now, he teams up with Torres who had an equal hand in the other mind-boggling series that also has ties to Kindt and his work. This is another stepping stone into career-defining moments for these already formidable creators. 

Subgenre #1 will be available at your favorite local comic shop and digitally on September 27, 2023.
