Sony Unveils PlayStation Stars Loyalty Program
Sony has announced a new loyalty program aimed at players called PlayStation Stars. As explained in the blog post from PlayStation, the free program rewards points by completed “campaigns” and challenges in games.
Grace Chen, vice president of network advertising, loyalty & licensed merchandise noted that earning points will come as a result of winning tournaments, earning specific trophies, or even more fruitful tasks such as being the first player in your local time zone to platinum a particular title. PlayStation Stars will also feature a “monthly check-in” campaign that players can complete by playing a game.
The points earned will be redeemable for rewards that include PS Store products, PSN wallet funds, or “digital collectibles.” Players with PlayStation Plus will also automatically earn loyalty points for making purchases. Some of the digital rewards include game characters, digital figurines, among others, and will have a varying scale of rarity and Cheng states that players will have “ultra rare” collectibles to hunt down.
PlayStation Stars will slowly roll out across different regions sometime in 2022. One thing to note is that Chen mentioned in a previous interview with the Washington Post that these digital rewards are not NFT and the reward program does not use blockchain technology which Cheng says,
“It’s definitely not NFTs. Definitely not”
It sounds much like what we have seen in Steam years prior. Digital rewards that can be traded or sold. This could be a free program accessible to players to earn rewards simply for playing games as they have been all along. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
