A world where humanity has completely destroyed the atmosphere and the Earth has been cooked by the sun, forcing all remaining survivors underground.  This is the reality in Evan Carothers‘ TOXX #1 – #2.  Carothers takes us on an adventure within the remnants of the world we once knew with the help of creators Eric Palicki, Ben Worrell, Maria Gasperoni, and James Emmett.

Here is a summary:

Lingering radiation and a toxic atmosphere have driven the last dregs of humanity underground.  Some brave few venture above to gather the reagents for Toxxing, the lifesaving medical process to stave off mutation. Claire is among them–one of the youngest, she has only known a life of hardship and despair.  When a routine Toxxing reveals the most unexpected gift of hope growing inside her, she suddenly has more than her own survival at stake.  

But what does an expecting mother do in a broken world where everyone left alive will kill for control of your precious new resource? The same thing you have been doing your whole life–find a way to stay alive.

This post-apocalyptic tale was an intense ride right from page one!  Seeing how these people have adapted to life under the extreme heat of the sun and how life has changed is a sobering foreshadowing of how life could possibly be.  It’s interesting to see how the unfiltered heat from the sun affects everyone differently.

Book two gives us a bit of a rewind and gives us some backstory for the first book, then catches us up to current time, which leaves us with one heck of a cliffhanger!
