Superman & Lois Gets Shortened Season 4 Renewal

Superman & Lois Gets Shortened Season 4 Renewal

Unlike the fate that has befallen Gotham Knights, Winchesters, Kung Fu, and Walker: Independence. Superman & Lois has gotten a shortened season 4 renewal. Even as it all pointed to the series joining the list of cancellations, we will be getting what is likely its final season before Nexstar finishes cleaning house on The CW‘s lineup of superhero and scripted TV.

As the man of steel survives yet another threat after the series was in danger during the big shakeup at DC as James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins of DC Studios, Gunn stayed true to his word as he previously assured fans Superman & Lois would see at least one more season.

Gotham Knights Canceled

Shortly after the announcement that Jensen Ackles had not been able to find a home for The Winchesters. The blows continue for the series looking for a new home after The CW looked to move away from these new series despite their success. Gotham Knights has now been officially canceled as well.

The series cancellation may not be such a surprise to many as it did not get the greatest reception in its eight-episode season 1 run but there were many online championing for the series to return for another season which unfortunately will not be the case.

The Winchesters: The End of the Family Business

The Winchesters has been canceled at The CW. The Supernatural prequel series will not be getting a second season on the network. The series was produced by Jensen Ackles who played Dean Winchester in the original series and has launched a campaign to save the series and begun shopping it to other networks while encouraging fans to spread the word and #SaveTheWinchesters.

Since The CW saw a change in majority ownership, the focus was said to be shifting to unscripted TV but with such promising series which were flagship series of the network for years, one could have hoped that would earn them a spot in the small roster of scripted TV but unfortunately was not the case with The CW releasing a statement regarding the cancellations, saying:

“As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions. We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of ‘Kung Fu’ and ‘The Winchesters’ for all their hard work, creativity and dedication.”

The Winchesters was a prequel series that followed the parents of Supernatural leads Dean (Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) Winchester’s parents. A younger John (Drake Rodger) and Mary (Meg Donnelly) Winchester are introduced with Ackles narrating the series about how the two met and the troubles they ran into as they lived their life in “the family business”. The series showed promise and further catapulted itself with the immense popularity of Supernatural which still stands strong even today after delivering fifteen seasons and amassing a big following of fans in that time.

What other series have been hit by The CW‘s rounds of cancellations?

This is not the first round of cancellations coming from the network as more series have already gotten the ax with the Kung Fu reboot series and the Walker spinoff prequel series Walker: Independence also having been canceled. Kung Fu starred Olivia Liang as Nicky Shen as she returns home after visiting a Chinese monastery and the home she returns to is riddled with crime. She then puts her martial arts skills to work as she fights the corruption infecting her home in the reimagining of the David Carradine-led 1972 series of the same name.

Walker: Independence also hits close to home to the Supernatural family as Padalecki produced the spinoff prequel series from his Walker Texas Ranger reboot series that he stars in. The series starred Katherine McNamara, Matt Barr, and Justin Johnson. The series reportedly saw itself on the cancellation list as the new network owner Nexstar looks to make cuts on the less-profitable scripted series.

These shake-ups are hurtful to see as fans and as part of the creative teams that work tirelessly on these projects and it’s an unfortunate re-occurrence we see time and time again when networks are merged or change ownership as we saw most recently with the Warner Bros. Discovery merger that saw a HUGE slate of cancellations and content affected.
