Legendary Batman Voice Actor Kevin Conroy Passes Away At Age 66
Kevin Conroy, the legendary voice actor of Batman in Batman: The Animated Series as well as the Batman Arkham video game trilogy, the Arrowverse‘s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, and many other projects has passed away at the age of 66. The news came from his co-star Diane Pershing who voiced Poison Ivy in Batman: The Animated Series via a social media post announcing the passing of Conroy.
First reported as an illness, it was later identified as cancer with Warner Bros. also confirming the news of his passing.
In the social media post, Pershing said:
“Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday. He’s been ill for a while but he really put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans. He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world. Below are pictures of Kevin with Loren Lester who plays Robin another with me and Tara Strong who is in the later episodes of Batman cartoons. And then finally, one of Kevin and me in front of the huge audiences we used to get when we did our panels. RIP, friend.”
Conroy was an icon who emulated superheroism during his career dating back to the 70s. He brought a voice to one of the most popular comic book characters in not only the DC universe but the comic book universe as a whole and his portrayal of the Dark Knight in the acclaimed animated series Batman: The Animated Series made his voice resonate with every comic book fan that grew up watching the series and even to younger generations as the timeless animated series remains one of the most popular animated series of our time.
Mark Hamill, who voiced Joker in Batman: The Animated Series released a press release from Warner Bros., saying:
“Kevin was a brilliant actor. For several generations, he has been the definitive Batman. It was one of those perfect scenarios where they got the exact right guy for the exact right part, and the world was better for it. His rhythms and subtleties, tones and delivery – that all also helped inform my performance. He was the ideal partner – it was such a complementary, creative experience. I couldn’t have done it without him. He will always be my Batman.”
Hamill said it best as Conroy will always be our Batman. Conroy is survived by his husband, sister, and brother. We offer our condolences to his loved ones and the entire fandom.
