James Gunn Working on A New DC Movie
James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squad and creator of the hit HBO Max original series Peacemaker is working on a new DC film for Warner Bros. Discovery according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Whether this is delving further into his soft reboot of Suicide Squad which led to the hit spinoff series starring John Cena as Peacemaker, is unknown but Gunn is reportedly in talks with Peter Safran for a new project.
The development of the film might be in the very early stages as the report states that Gunn will first focus on the second season of Peacemaker before taking on the new DC project. Whether that feeds into its connection to his previous work on The Suicide Squad or not, remains to be seen but there is no indication of which heroes or property he plans to take on.
There has been a shadow over the entire studio since they made the decision to shake up the DC universe and canceled the Batgirl film but it seems as if the studio has moved on from axing projects to moving the DCEU forward with their long-form plans for the comic book superhero universe. The studio also reported that they are in the development of Man of Steel 2 with Henry Cavill set to reprise his role of Clark Kent/Superman.
Gunn is a bit of a godsend to comic book universes as we have seen when he put the Guardians of the Galaxy on the map which led to the film’s immense success and the team becoming an integral part of the MCU’s Infinity Saga. He also took a lackluster Suicide Squad film that did not sit well with many fans and put out a polished film that has led to a spinoff series that the network seems to have gone all in for. Whether he continues with other Marvel projects, remains to be seen, but DC fans should be very excited for what’s to come.
