HBO Max Cancels Pennyworth After Three Seasons
HBO Max has canceled Pennyworth after three seasons at the streamer. The origin series following Bruce Wayne/Batman’s butler originally premiered as an Epix original but saw itself reach a wider audience through HBO Max and saw growth through the second and third seasons.
Showrunner/producer Bruno Heller pointed this out during an interview with Deadline prior, saying:
“I don’t mean to be crass about this, but you’re on a shelf and where you are on the shelf becomes very important in a way that it wasn’t before. So platforms matter. We are just very excited to be in the center aisle, in the middle of shelf, next to the cornflakes instead of up there with the maple honey granola with soy granules in it. All of those cereals have an audience, but you get a bigger audience if you’re next to the Frosted Flakes.”
After one season with Epix and a successful second season at HBO Max, the series had even rebranded itself during its third season with the title Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler. The third season saw a very promising reaction from both critics and fans but it seems as though this was not enough to keep Alfred going and is likely due to the continued restructuring of DC which saw other series that have been phenomenal and consistent get axed in Titans and Doom Patrol.
The series starred Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, Emma Paetz, Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater, and Simon Manyonda. The series was developed by Heller and produced alongside Danny Cannon which is based on DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. The series was executive produced by Matthew Patnick and John Stephens.
A spokesperson for HBO Max shared a statement thanking the creators, saying:
“While HBO Max is not moving forward with another season of ‘Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler,’ we are very thankful to creator Bruno Heller and executive producers Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon and John Stephens, along with Warner Bros.
Television, for their brilliant, unique, gripping depiction of the origin of Alfred Pennyworth, one of the most iconic characters in the Batman world. An incredible blend of action, drama and humor, for three seasons, ‘Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler’ has taken fans on a mind-bending ride into Alfred’s eccentric world and the beginnings of cutting-edge super heroes and super villains.”

All three seasons of Pennyworth are still available on HBO Max.
