Harry Potter Reboot Series Gets 7-Season Order with J.K. Rowling Producing

HBO‘s attempt at a longer form reboot of the Harry Potter franchise is officially a go as the reboot series gets a 7-season order with J.K. Rowling producing. The series is now officially in the works at the newly revamped streaming platform coming HBO Max and Discovery+ which is titled MAX. The series hopes to be a faithful adaptation of the novels and with that in mind, will adapt each book in the series into a season with Rowling attached to ensure a faithful adaptation of the book series comes to life.

HBO is reportedly nearing a deal for a Harry Potter reboot series. According to Bloomberg, Warner Bros. is close to sealing the deal which will bring about a TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s popular book series that spawned one of the most popular film franchises with the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films. The series will make its way to streaming and cable with each season planned to adapt one of the books in the series. 

With that in mind, we are looking at a possible seven-season run with the report adding that CEO David Zaslav and HBO chief Casey Bloys worked to convince Rowling to produce the new series. This isn’t the first time Warner Bros. has made it known that they want to expand or build on the Harry Potter franchise, including Fantastic Beasts. 

Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels has made it known that more Harry Potter was on the way, saying: 

“Take Harry Potter as an example, the Wizarding World, the fact that we are enjoying this massive success with the Hogwarts Legacy launch, 12 years after the last film came out, shows that there is so much opportunity and we’re only just starting to expand that. We’ve got the new Harry Potter tour coming up in Tokyo in the middle of the year. Long story short, I think this one-company approach, great leadership in the individual business units, but coordinated franchise management is probably one of the biggest opportunities the company has.”

Rowling will be attached to the series in some form according to the Bloomberg report to ensure the project “remains loyal to her original material”. The full extent of her involvement in the series is unknown. 

The deal is still being finalized and more information is likely on the way for the Harry Potter TV series.
