Godzilla Minus One Celebrates Monstrous IMAX Box Office Opening for Japanese Title

Godzilla Minus One directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki just premiered in Japan recently and has made a remarkable impact in the history of Japanese cinema. During its opening weekend, the film garnered an astonishing $1.2 million from just 49 IMAX screens, breaking records as the largest IMAX opening ever for a live-action Japanese title in Japan. Moreover, it proudly holds the distinction of being the fourth-highest live-action IMAX opening and the fifth-highest IMAX opening for a local title in the country.

This highly anticipated film is a collaboration between Toho Studios and Robot, and marks the 37th installment in the Godzilla franchise, as well as the 33rd film produced by Toho Studios. Godzilla Minus One took Japan by storm, releasing in over 500 theaters nationwide, including various formats such as IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX, and Dolby Cinema. This expansive release cemented its place as one of Japan’s widest theatrical distributions to date.

The film takes place just after the war, when Japan has no self-defense force or no armaments. The starting point is what happens if Godzilla comes to Japan while it is completely disarmed.

The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki, with music by Naoki Sato. This also marks the first Japanese Godzilla film to be released domestically since 2016’s Shin Godzilla.
