Elden Ring was released less than a month ago and has already become FromSoftware‘s best-selling “Soulsborne” game yet amassing 12M copies sold.

Comparing it to the most recent entry in the Dark Souls series, Dark Souls 3. DS 3 sold 3M copies in two months and as of 2020, has sold 10M copies. This makes Elden Ring‘s sales even more impressive having sold 2M more copies in just a matter of weeks. FromSoftware also praised the game in their press release for selling 1M of the 12M copies inside of Japan.

Elden Ring director and FromSoftware president and CEO, Hidetaka Miyazaki, wrote in the press release:

“It’s astonishing to see just how many people have been playing Elden Ring. I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire development team. Elden Ring is based on a mythological story written by George R.R. Martin. We hope players enjoy a high level of freedom when adventuring through its vast world, exploring its many secrets and facing up to its many threats. Thank you for your continued support.”

In the press release, Bandai Namco CEO and president Yasuo Miyakawa said the publisher is looking to expand Elden Ring beyond games and referred to it as a brand, which indicates we have more to come in this universe, possibly in other mediums:

“Much effort was placed into creating Elden Ring so that we could exceed the expectations of our fans worldwide,” Miyakawa wrote in the press release. “In like manner, we will continue our efforts in expanding the brand beyond the game itself, and into everyone’s daily life. We will continue to create enjoyment and fulfillment through entertainment, so that we can come closer and connect to our fans around the world.”

Lastly, the press release adds:

“Please look forward to more of Elden Ring as an IP (characters and other intellectual property) in hopes of expanding beyond the realm of games.”

All of this on top of the huge success the game has brought in such a short time indicates that both Bandai and FromSoftware have big plans for Elden Ring in the future. With George R.R. Martin playing a role in establishing the backbone of this world, it veering into other mediums is a very exciting idea. Stay tuned for more.
