Comic Series BRZRKR Getting Anime Series on Netflix

Boom! Studios comic series BRZRKR from creators Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt had already been greenlit for a live-action film adaptation on Netflix prior. At San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that the streamer has plans for a 2-season anime adaptation as well. Boom! Studios’ Stephen Christy confirmed the news during their panel that the anime adaptation would be produced by animation studio I.G. who previously worked on Ghost in the Shell and Eden of the East.

The anime adaptation will be produced for a 2-season adaptation at the streamer and while the full episode count was not revealed, it was noted that the adaptation will be more contained rather than a continuation of the film. Reeves and Kindt co-write the comic series with art by Ron Garney. The series follows B, the immortal mercenary who has spent the last 80,000 years of his life mastering his skills as a killer.

He now works as an agent with the U.S. government with the hopes that they will find a way to end his unnaturally long life. Reeves is already confirmed to play B in the live-action film and will also voice him in the anime adaptation.

Reeves will also be writing a BRZRKR novel with a yet-to-be-named New York Times bestselling author which he was not allowed to name just yet. One hint was Reeves’ mention that this author was one of his favorite writers, which he specifically contacted to collaborate on the Random House novel.

During the panel, Reeves said:

“We met in Berlin and it was really cool. They had read the comic and they enjoyed it and they had a lot of questions and they were open and a curious. This will be a collaboration. He’s been kind enough… oh, I said he, whoops…”

BRZRKR is set to complete its comic series arc with Boom! Studios beginning September 2022 and will include a double-sized finale with issue #12. Reeves teased, “Some stuff’s gonna happen with Caldwell. HQ is going to kind of get what they want [menacing laugh]. Things are going to get more difficult. BOOM! is giving us a double issue for issue #12. So it’s 48 pages and we’re really excited about where the story goes”

Whether a sequel is in the plans for the future, or B’s story is set to jump into another medium as a continuation is unknown. For now, we know that the series will continue with its final comic book arc, novel, live-action film adaptation, and an anime adaptation. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
