‘What It’s Like’ – Anonymous Mental Health Submission From the Geek Community, For the Geek Community
One of our very own geeks in our community has shared a special piece of their struggles with mental health. It is important to share amongst each other the journey and obstacles we face in the spirit of moving forward during our struggles against the challenges of mental health. Please take a moment to read the words shared by someone in our community and share their story with someone you feel might benefit from hearing their story. Remember, you are not alone.
To me, depression is a constant battle between wanting to be welcomed yet wanting to be alone. Depression is the constant feeling of darkness that hangs overhead no matter how bright it is. It’s the constant fatigue of being alive just to experience the same mundane existence of so-called life.
Being an animal trapped within a habitat in a zoo. Having countless friends yet thinking you don’t at the same time. No one giving you the time of day when you’re crying out for help and being alone to fight your inner struggles on a daily basis. A cry for help in a pitch-black forest knowing there is a lifeline in sight yet grabbing the lead ball and chain just for an end to the fight and struggle. Grasping at nonexistent hands of comfort and help. Darkness slowly sinks you down knowing you just want to be normal and to fit in for at least a moment of time.
Just to get the sweet taste of light that is always a spark and grasp away just waiting to be snuffed out by the omnipresent sadness that is one’s own head. To me this is the struggle I deal with on a daily basis, I implore that if anyone ever asks for help please be the lifeline they need, a simple hug or even a small conversation can easily be the catalyst for someone to get that spark of light they need within themselves to tame the growing darkness in their head and hearts even if for a fleeting moment of time. Depression is my fight, my cloud, my friend.
The challenges that face those struggling with mental health can manifest in many different ways. Depression, anxiety, and other forms of mental illnesses pave a different path for every single person struggling with these challenges. It is important to remember, that even if we face different obstacles or none at all, we should find someone or something to help alleviate the weight of it all.
