A Court of Thorns and Roses TV Series Still in Development at Hulu

Recent reports about the TV adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses suggested that the production had been canceled, but conflicting information has emerged. TVLine initially reported the series had been scrapped, with no plans to shop it around to other distributors. However, Variety countered this claim, stating that the series is still in development at Hulu.

The romantic fantasy series, based on Sarah J. Maas‘ 2015 novel, follows the story of Feyre Archeron, a 19-year-old huntress, who is kidnapped and brought to the faerie lands of Prythian after she kills a faerie wolf. Her kidnapper is Tamlin, a High Fae and one of the seven High Lords of Prythian. The novel gained significant attention on TikTok, contributing to the popularity of the Maas-Verse, which has seen the release of several sequels.

It has been confirmed that the ACOTAR series is connected to Maas’s other novel series, including Throne of Glass and Crescent City. Throne of Glass follows the journey of Celaena Sardothien, a teenage assassin in a corrupt kingdom with a tyrannical ruler, the King of Adarlan. As the tale progresses, Celaena forms unexpected bonds and uncovers a conspiracy amidst her adventures.

Crescent City follows Bryce Quinlan, a half-human, half-Fae as she attempts to avenge her friends’ murders and protect her vibrant city.

The most recent installment in the ACOTAR series is 2021’s A Court of Silver Flames, while the most recent Maas novel is the third entry in Crescent City’s House of Flame and Shadow.

Sarah J. Maas announced in 2021 that she was collaborating with Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, on the adaptation. Despite limited updates, Moore stated in November:

“It’s still in development. We’ve written some scripts, and we’re just sort of waiting. I think the whole town is kind of waiting to see if we have actors before things really move forward, but it’s still in development.”

Crescent City Books in Order scaled 1

With Maas involved in the development, the complexity and interconnected nature of her series, the adaptation is poised as a significant undertaking, potentially comparable in scope to Game of Thrones. The interconnectivity of Maas’s series adds an additional layer of planning and development, with the potential to launch a universe similar to the MCU.

This scale and intricacy may explain why the series is seeing a longer timeline for the series’ development. Stay tuned for more updates on the ACOTAR TV series adaptation.
