Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast as the lead in Marvel‘s Wonder Man series. The actor will be making a move from the DC universe as he previously starred in Aquaman. A role he will reprise in the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Now he enters the MCU in the Disney+ series in development from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ director Destin Daniel Cretton who will develop the Wonder Man series alongside Hawkeye co-producer Andrew Guest. Also in the series, will be Ben Kingsley who reprises his role of Trevor Slattery. Originally introduced as The Mandarin in the Iron Man films.

The Mandarin, who was retconned as not a villain in Shang-Chi could be involved with Simon Williams/Wonder Man’s ties to Hollywood, and Slattery being an actor could be how these two cross paths. All speculation at this point as no details have been released on the series. Wonder Man was created by Stan Lee with illustrations by Jack Kirby and Don Heck. He first appeared in Marvel Comics in the 1964 issue The Avengers #9. Originally an antagonist of The Avengers while working for Baron Zemo, he later joins Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and also enters the world of acting with superhero Hercules helping establish his career.
Mateen II has a long list of respectable credits to his name showcasing how talented the actor is. He has appeared in The Matrix Resurrection, Candyman, Ambulance, Us, The Greatest Showman, Black Mirror, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Emergency Contact along with his entries in the Aquaman franchise, and now looks to be a part of the biggest superhero franchise with the MCU.
Stay tuned as more information is released on the highly-anticipated Wonder Man series.
