Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3 Canceled as DC Shifts Strategy Under Gunn and Safran’s Leadership
DC Studios has been shifting its lineup for some time now. Previously axing projects that didn’t fit under the plans for the new head of Warner Bros. Discovery to the change in strategy now that James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over leadership of DC Studios and look to implement their long-term vision of the DCEU. The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Wonder Woman 3 has been canceled as the Gal Gadot-led threequel does not align with the plans that Gunn and Safran have for the DCEU’s future.
Changes were imminent as Gunna and Safran made their way back to L.A. after an extensive planning session in Aspen as they prepared for what the future of the DCEU will entail. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins had reportedly recently turned in a draft for Wonder Woman 3 which she co-wrote alongside Geoff Johns but Gunn and Safran are said to have broken the news to Jenkins of the decision to not move forward. Gadot could very well still have a future in the franchise as the bearer of the Lasso of Truth.
Gadot recently shared on social media that she is pinching herself at the thought of playing the iconic role. Furthermore, she goes on to say, “Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you.” Looking at this half glass full could indicate that she is still part of the DCEU future although paving a different path for the character. This could also be seen as a farewell of sorts as she does say that she cannot wait to share Wonder Woman‘s next chapter. Gadot has done an immense service to the character and has embodied the identity of Wonder Woman in a way that would make her nearly irreplaceable.
First taking on the role in 2017 she portrayed the character in her solo film, Zack Snyder‘s Batman v. Superman, Justice League, and then had the release of her solo sequel film in Wonder Woman 1984. The sequel received a not-so-promising response but truthfully, this was at no fault to Jenkins or Gadot as the film showed promise but had the challenge of a release during the pandemic.
There is surely more to come from Gunn and Safran as the pieces begin to shift in the direction of the vision they have crafted. Although it may lead to the end of the Snyderverse altogether which could lead to a shift or change in who portrays our favorite characters, I am very excited to see what the duo at DC Studios is cooking up for DC fans.
