Velma Trailer Pokes Fun At Haters and Pulls Inspiration From Horror Classics
HBO Max has revealed the trailer for the upcoming adult animated series Velma. In the trailer, we see the series poke fun at the haters after it was earlier revealed that Velma Dinkley’s character from Scooby–Doo is a lesbian. This was received with backlash by certain fans who did not like the twist in Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo. Many other issues were noted by these opinionated fans but I digress. The lovable and geeky glasses-wearing brainiac of Mystery Inc is headed to the streaming platform and is voiced by the talented Mindy Kaling.
The trailer took some fun inspiration from some classic films in the horror genre with nods to Scream and When a Stranger Calls as Velma picks up the phone and is asked if she “likes solving mysteries.” The references were fun and paint a picture of what the adult animated show could bring to the platform. If it looks to deliver what the Harley Quinn series has done for the character, then we cannot wait to see what Kaling and the rest of the cast and creators cook up for us in this origin story for the character.
The series description reads:
“VELMA is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”
Starring alongside Kaling will be Constance Wu, Sam Richardson, Glenn Howerton, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Ming-Na Wen, Cherry Jones, plus many more.
Velma does not currently have a release date but is expected to premiere exclusively on HBO Max sometime in 2023.
