The Witcher Remake: CD Projekt Red Reveals Codename Canis Majoris is Remake of First Witcher Game
CD Projekt Red has revealed that the project previously codenamed Canis Majoris will be a remake of The Witcher. Earlier in the month, CD Projekt Red had announced that they had quite a few projects in the works including a new Cyberpunk game and multiple Witcher games. Canis Majoris was referenced to be a “full-fledged” Witcher title and with the reveal of The Witcher remake, we now know that they plan on building the remake from the ground up.
As the developer looks to rebuild the original title in the hit trilogy series with the 2007 entry that started it all. The developer notes in their press release that they plan on bringing The Witcher back to a new generation of fans using the same toolset they will be using for the new Witcher saga in development and the game will be built using Unreal Engine 5 technology. The project finds itself in the early stages of development at developer Fool’s Theory. The studio is known for its skill in RPGs and also took part in the development of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Adam Badowski, Head of Studio for CD Projekt Red shared the momentous achievement they felt with The Witcher, saying:
“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger.
Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”
Jakub Rokosz, CEO of Fool’s Theory added:
“I am very happy that my professional paths have crossed again with fellow developers from the time of working together on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Especially when it’s a remake of a project that is so close to our hearts. We are excited to join forces with CD PROJEKT RED, and our goal is to give players another great game from the iconic Witcher series.”
No further details or release date was given on The Witcher Remake but with the early stages of development it finds itself in, it may be a while before we get more news. This does begin to unveil CD Projekt Red‘s long-term strategy update for their big IP and should be a noteworthy entry in the The Withcer franchise.
