The Power Fantasy: Image Comics Reveals Upcoming Fantasy Series from Gillen and Wijngaard
Renowned writer Kieron Gillen and talented artist Caspar Wijngaard made a significant impact at the Emerald City Comic Con when they announced their upcoming series, The Power Fantasy. The duo, known for their work on The Wicked + The Divine, Die, Home Sick Pilots, and All Against All, captivated the comic fans with the exciting news during Gillen’s Spotlight panel.

The Power Fantasy is set in a world where the term “Superpowered” is exclusively reserved for individuals possessing the destructive potential equivalent to the nuclear arsenal of the most powerful nations on Earth. With only six superpowered beings currently in existence, the stability of the entire planet hinges on the avoidance of any conflicts among them.
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kieron Gillen revealed:
“The Power Fantasy emerged in a similar way to The Wicked + The Divine. It’s a comic informed by superheroes, but one where a fight is the absolute lose state, for everyone. It’s set from 1945-1999, and so is a chance to really have fun with an alternate cultural history too.”
Gillen has become a master craftsman in his ingenious ability to weave intricate worlds. The Wicked + The Divine delivered sharp dialogue as we followed the reincarnated gods in their most recent forms. Gillen delivered a lens into a small window of the god’s incarnate human lives that left readers mesmerized.
Gillen also delivers an astounding story and universe enveloped in the fantasy world of D&D with his series DIE which saw him team up with Stephanie Hans. Journeying into the depths of a fantasy world, a group of teens find themselves dragged into their RPG campaign in something out of Jumanji only to return years later. Some physically scarred, all emotionally, and one member of their tight-knit group short.
Years later, they find themselves returning to this fantasy world that traumatized them and Gillen goes to deliver a goth Jumanji adventure that is woven within some of the literary icons of our time to deliver a series that only comes around once in a lifetime.

Caspar Wijngaard expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating:
“Once Kieron had pitched the basic outline for The Power Fantasy I knew this was the story I felt most comfortable telling. We’ve been able to create some incredible characters, each with their own vibrant personalities and worlds in which they inhabit.”
Wijngaard delivered art to Home Sick Pilots that drove the punk rock comic series home for all fans who jumped into the mini-series. From the line work to the colors, this series delivered a mashup of elements that put it on everyone’s pull list.
All Against All saw Wijngaard doing what he does best once again, this time teaming with Alex Paknadel to deliver a series that inverted many familiar tropes.

Described as a blend between The Boys and Watchmen with a music video aesthetic, The Power Fantasy #1 is anticipated to hit your favorite local comic book shops in August.
