The Mysteries: Calvin and Hobbes Creator Creating an Adult Graphic Novel
Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson is set to release a dark and adult graphic novel through Simon & Schuster. This is a different path than what we have previously seen from the creator of the beloved comic strip featuring the adventures of a young boy named Calvin and his pal Hobbes who is a stuffed tiger although in his eyes is a living and breathing best pal. The comic was often praised for touching on real issues and providing an intellectual view of these issues through the use of humor and comics.
The graphic novel will be titled The Mysteries and will feature 72 pages created in collaboration between Watterson and caricaturist John Kascht. This project will be the result of a collaboration the two artists have been working on for years and will finally be in readers’ hands this year.
Described as “a fable for grown-ups,” the story will explore “what lies beyond human understanding.” with the mysterious tale putting the spotlight around a “long-ago kingdom, afflicted by unexplainable calamities.” Read the full description below:
” a long-ago kingdom is afflicted with unexplainable calamities. Hoping to end the torment, the king dispatches his knights to discover the source of the mysterious events. Years later, a single battered knight returns.”
Calvin and Hobbes saw its conclusion in 1995 and this will mark Watterson’s first major project since his retirement. This should be a wonderful return for Watterson and a present surprise for longtime fans that now will see a darker tale from the mind of Watterson. Having graced us with years of the simple but effective wisdom of Calvin and Hobbes for 10 years. Watterson stepped away after feeling he had given all he had to the medium and now returns with a fresh and twisted take on fables.
The Mysteries is available for preorder now and will release on October 10, 2023.
