The Last of Us Series Will Premiere in January 2023 According to HBO Listing

HBO‘s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us may be arriving sooner than any of us could have anticipated. The series is adapted from Naughty Dog’s hit video game series and was part of an HBO listing that shows the series premiering in January 2023. Subscribers of HBO Max noticed that the page for the Last of Us series had a description of the show with a January 15, 2023 release date as Eurogamer reported.

This can only be seen by U.S. subscribers currently. It has since been removed but many users reported the following in the description:

“A preview of the post-apocalyptic drama series based on the critically acclaimed video game,” The Last of Us: Season 1 Sneak Peek’s description reads. “Premieres January 15.” 

The hit video game followed Joel and Ellie during an apocalyptic world crippled by a fungal infection that has devasted over half the population in the world. Joel is a black market smuggler tasked with protecting Ellie as she is the first immune to the brain-altering disease.

HBO‘s description of the series reads:

“The series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”

The series stars Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsay, Storm Reid, Nick Offerman, Anna Torv, Merle Dandridge, Gabriel Luna, Nico Parker, Jeffrey Pierce, and Murray Bartlett. Also previously announced during the Summer Game Fest presentation was that original voice actors of Ellie and Joel Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker will appear in the series in undisclosed roles.

The first episode of The Last of Us will be directed by Kantemir Balagov. Original game creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin are listed as creators for The Last of Us and will also serve as executive producers.

The Last of Us is expected to premiere on HBO on January 15, 2023, if the listing is any indication. While we wait for confirmation, check out the trailer below:
