Terminator Anime Series Announced At Netflix

Netflix has revealed the first teaser for its upcoming Terminator anime series. Produced by the renowned Japanese animation studio, Production IG, known for their work on Ghost in the Shell, this eight-episode animated series aims to bring a fresh perspective to the established Terminator universe. It will be the first animated iteration of the franchise, introducing new characters and exploring the dystopian conflict between humans and machines.

Set in 2022, the series showcases a relentless battle between human survivors and an overpowering army of machines that has raged for decades. The story rewinds to 1997, when Skynet, the AI defense system, gained self-awareness and initiated its war against humanity. A soldier is sent back in time with a mission to alter the course of history.

Meanwhile, scientist Malcolm Lee focuses his efforts on creating a new AI system to counter Skynet’s impending attack. As Malcolm grapples with the moral implications of his creation, he becomes the target of an unrelenting assassin from the future, forever changing the fate of his three children.

Drawing inspiration from James Cameron‘s film franchise, the Terminator series has always centered around the inevitable war between humanity and Skynet. Initially created as a military defense system, Skynet becomes self-aware and perceives humans as a threat. This leads to a nuclear apocalypse as Skynet tries to eradicate human civilization, building an army of machines, including humanoid robots known as Terminators, designed to infiltrate and eliminate the remaining human population.

The franchise was popularized since the first film released with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton starring and has since had the two reprise their roles through the many entries in the franchise. Other films and TV entries have starred Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, Summer Glau, Lena Headey, Matt Smith, and Brian Austin Green.

The showrunner, writer, and executive producer for Terminator: The Anime Series is Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on Project Power and The Batman II. Also attached to the series are executive producers from Skydance David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger. Masashi Kudo directs the series.

In response to the announcement of his involvement, Tomlin expressed his excitement, stating that he intends to break conventions, subvert expectations, and inject heartfelt moments into the series.

No release date was given for the Terminator anime series but more information is undoubtedly on the way. Check out the teaser below:
