Speed Racer Live-Action Series Coming to Apple With J.J. Abrams Producing
Apple has announced that a live-action adaptation of the hit manga series Speed Racer is in the works with J.J. Abrams producing. Variety is reporting that the live-action adaptation is receiving a series order from the streamer. The series adaptation is being written and executive produced by Ron Fitzgerald and Hiram Martinez who will also serve as co-showrunners on the series.
The anime description reads:
“Teenager Gô Mifune aspires to be the world’s best race-car champion with the help of his friends, family and his father’s high-tech race-car, the Mach 5.”
Speed Racer has been a popular property for decades since the manga series titled Mach GoGoGo was released in 1966. The very next year we got the anime series that took pop culture by storm with over 50 episodes released during its run. The anime series also got a film adaptation in 2008 that was directed by The Wachowskis and starred Emile Hirsch in the lead role which led to a Nickelodeon series that ran for two seasons titled Speed Racer: The Next Generation.
The live-action adaptation has reportedly been in development for some time now and with a series order secured, the series should be making headway with more news coming soon.
