So, imagine my excitement when I heard that not only was Netflix announced Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, co-written by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Executive Produced by Edgar Wright, and voiced by the original cast of the movie?  I was fully committed and behind everything about this new show titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.  If you’re unfamiliar, here’s the premise.

**WARNING**

Some light spoilers are ahead, so if you want to experience it for yourself, I suggest taking a minute and watching the first episode before you continue.

Ok…got it all watched?  Or don’t mind spoilers?  Well, here we go…

The series, set in Toronto, Canada, serves as an alternate retelling of the original Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series and movie. Like in the original series, Scott Pilgrim, a bassist in an indie band, falls in love with Ramona Flowers, a mysterious delivery girl, attracting the attention of Ramona’s seven evil exes.

Things take an unexpected turn, however, when Scott actually loses his battle against Ramona’s first evil ex Matthew Patel and is seemingly killed. As everyone’s lives, including those of Ramona’s evil exes, change drastically as a result, Ramona learns that Scott may still be alive and decides to investigate his disappearance.

I recently finished the series, and I was blown away.  I went into this thinking it would be some kind of sequel to the movie, or even to the book series, and in a way, it kind of is. But really, what is more, is kind of a reboot of the original story that we all know and love.  It’s a chance to kind of modernize it a little for a new generation of fans, and it’s a way to go a little more in-depth with some characters we only have been able to scratch the surface with.

It changes perspective, focusing more on Ramona Flowers instead of Scott Pilgrim, giving her a chance to revisit her past and face the problems that she helped create and handle them better now that she is older and more well-equipped to deal with bad situations.

It was so much fun to hear the characters brought to life once again by their original actors, with the introduction of some new voices, and some surprise guest voices!  There were so many nods to the original books, the movie, and even the video game that were still very fun to see, while the series still managed to be its own thing.

The ending had a surprise twist that I didn’t see coming, and things get left open for what potentially could be a second season, I know I’ll be crossing my fingers and toes for that to happen!

The entire first season of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is streaming on Netflix now, so make sure you go check it out and spread the word!
