Playstation and Discord have announced a new partnership with Discord. App integration to begin “early next year.”
PlayStation has announced a new partnership with Discord that will begin integrating the popular chat app with PlayStation Network in early 2022. This is following Microsoft’s failed negotiations to acquire Discord for $10 billion.
The partnership between Playstation and Discord is surely to improve their voice communications system on the Playstation Network that is really lacking in comparison to it’s competitors.
The PlayStation Network (PSN) will eventually get better voice comms by 2022. Sony invested a minority stake during one of Discord’s investment rounds. Through this partnership, Sony plans to integrate Discord into the PSN. Sony President and CEO Jim Ryan writes,
“Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”
The exact effects of this partnership remain to be seen. The investment only begins with the PlayStation-Discord partnership. Adding the voice communications app into PSN would be wonderful, especially with the app’s mobile presence. It also seems that this move will help cross-platform play between PSN users and non-PSN users by giving them a better voice comms system.
“Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do,” says Ryan. “We are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”
This is big news in the gaming community and we can’t wait to see what Playstation and Discord are able to cook up together.
