Night People #1 Preview Reveals A Violent and Volatile New Series Coming to Oni Press
Oni Press has revealed the Night People #1 preview. The first issue of an exhilarating and gritty new series by acclaimed author Barry Gifford. Known for his groundbreaking works such as Wild At Heart and his collaboration on David Lynch‘s cult film Lost Highway, Gifford brings his literary prowess to this visceral graphic fiction.
Adapted from Gifford’s renowned novel and penned by breakout writer Chris Condon (That Texas Blood, The Enfield Gang Massacre), each deluxe issue of Night People unravels a dark and mesmerizing journey that serves as a mesmerizing roadmap into the depths of the American subconscious.

Prepare to accompany an unlikely group of wanted criminals, merciless cartel killers, and lost souls as they navigate a dangerous landscape. This odyssey is brought to life by Condon alongside the artistry of a talented ensemble of illustrators, including Brian Level (Poison Ivy, Lazarus), Eisner Award winner Alexandre Tefenkgi (The Good Asian, Once Upon A Time at the End of the World), Artyom Topilin (I Hate This Place), and Marco Finnegan (Crossroad Blues).
Gifford shares:
“Night People goes beyond the boundaries of noir, offering a parable that revises our perception of the past while posing enigmatic questions about the present.
It draws from the influence of both the Church on the One Hand and the Church on the Other Hand, hinting at a future where the remaining individuals on Earth embark on an even more mysterious and treacherous voyage aboard a ghost ship sailing into the Sea of Red. As exemplified by this stunning graphic adaptation, the pursuit of a safe harbor is an eternal quest.”
Condon adds:
“Each issue of Night People presents a distinctive tale, necessitating a unique artistic approach. I am ecstatic about the artistic powerhouses Oni Press has assembled to undertake this adaptation with me. Barry’s novel is defined by its unpredictability, taking unexpected twists and introducing new characters in every chapter.
We have translated this dynamic approach into the adaptation, crafting a narrative that will exhilarate readers and leave them yearning to discover where this wild story will lead next.”

In our inaugural tale, meet Big Betty Stalcup and Miss Cutie Early, inseparable lovers and former convicts, who have found their freedom on parole, embracing a mission to cleanse the world of malevolence. Tragically, their pursuit of righteousness takes a savage turn, leaving behind a trail of mutilated bodies.
Delve into the unsettling dimensions of their star-crossed romance and trace the winding paths that led them to their fateful encounter at the Fort Sumatra Detention Center for Wayward Women. As their experiment in retribution reaches its climax, they enslave Rollo Lamar, a compassionate attorney, with the hope of re-educating at least one man before civilization meets its end.

Night People #1 features cover art from a remarkable lineup of talent, such as J.H. Williams III (Sandman: Overture, Promethea), Joëlle Jones (Wonder Girl, Lady Killer), Jacob Phillips (That Texas Blood, Newburn), and Brian Level (Poison Ivy, Lazarus). Brace yourself for a transformative journey down a dark and enigmatic highway that stretches from the vibrant streets of New Orleans to the mysterious Egypt City in Florida and back again.
NIGHT PEOPLE #1 will debut at your favorite local comic shop on March 6th, 2024.
