Griz Grobus: High Fantasy Graphic Novel Set for Trade Paperback Release At Image Comics
The high fantasy graphic novel, Griz Grobus, is slated for its trade paperback release from Image Comics. Co-written by the acclaimed artist Simon Roy (Prophet, Jan’s Atomic Heart, and Other Stories) and Jess Pollard, with Sergey Nazarov providing colors, Griz Grobus originated as a popular Webtoon sequential webcomic.
Riding the wave of its tremendous success, a Kickstarter campaign was launched in 2021 for a stunning hardcover edition. The campaign surpassed expectations, achieving full funding within a day and raising close to $70K, well beyond its goal. Now, with the forthcoming paperback edition this summer, Griz Grobus aims to captivate an even wider audience of readers.

Describing their creative vision, Simon Roy expressed:
“Part of what we wanted to make, in Griz Grobus, was a story that felt like a foreign film from a country you haven’t heard of—a synthesis of natural and familiar elements, seamlessly woven with the new and unfamiliar. The prospect of introducing an entirely new audience to our little pocket universe, and the myriad worlds within, is incredibly thrilling!”

Set in the same sci-fi universe as Simon Roy’s acclaimed Habitat, Griz Grobus unfolds in a world that has emerged from the collapse of an interstellar empire. However, unlike the dystopian descent into cannibal tyranny depicted in Habitat, the characters residing in Griz Grobus inhabit the idyllic rural world of Altamira, where post-utopian frontier life has blossomed into something wholesomely distinct.
Jess Pollard added:
“I can confidently say that Griz Grobus is one of the funniest, most delightful projects I’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of. Each time I read the story, it never fails to make me laugh as if it were my first encounter with it. My hope is that readers experience the same heartwarming joy when they delve into this edition, whether it’s their initial foray or a return to its pages.”

Griz Grobus weaves two parallel, intertwined narratives from a distant colony world. In a tranquil mountain village, the ambitious dreams of a young scribe unleash the resurrection of an ancient colonial-era priest-bot. This long-forgotten clergyman finds himself in a world that has outpaced his existence, yet he refuses to accept his obsolescence, much to the dismay of the scribe and the local townsfolk.
The second story, a mesmerizing mise-en-abyme, features Altamira’s beloved novel—devoured eagerly by the characters of the first tale. It spins a fantastical account of a war-god trapped within the body of a goose and the endeavors of a pacifist cook to delay the war-god’s return to the blood-soaked battlefield.

With its lush, intricately detailed artwork and stand-alone fable, Griz Grobus presents an irresistible allure for fans of renowned creatives such as Hayao Miyazaki, Asterix, and Arthur C. Clarke. Prepare to embark on a journey to a foreign land brimming with enchantment and untold wonders when Griz Grobus arrives at your favorite local comic shop on June 4th, 2024.
