New Lord of the Rings Movies are in the Works
New Lord of the Rings movies are in the works according to today’s Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call. New Line Cinema has struck a multi-year deal with Warner Bros. to develop more films from the universe of J.R.R. Tolkien. The deal between Warner Bros., New Line, and Embracer Group AB has opened the doors for more adaptations to become a reality within The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit with David Zaslav, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO stating that the deal will bring “multiple” films from the library of Tolkien.
This is not the first time this has been a topic of discussion for Zaslav with mentions of moving forward with Lord of the Rings films being discussed in last year’s earnings call as well. This was mentioned along with the possibility of more films in the Harry Potter franchise as well.
It doesn’t come as a surprise as to why they would want to develop more films in either of these franchises as Peter Jackson‘s trilogy earned almost $3 billion worldwide cumulatively. Not to mention the plethora of awards it earned with 17 Oscars total.
While not for lack of interest, the studio did often find itself held back by rights issues when trying to adapt more of Tolkien’s work. Currently, Amazon has nabbed the TV rights and released an astonishing premiere to their prequel series of Lord of the Rings and has a five-season arc planned. There is also the upcoming animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War on Rohirrim which is set to release on April 24, 2023.
Stay tuned as more information on the upcoming movies is released.
