New Lord of the Rings Game Being Developed by Private Division and Weta Workshop
A new Lord of the Rings game is being developed by Private Division and Weta Workshop. Private Division is a publisher under the Take-Two Interactive umbrella with Weta Workshop being the VFX studio that worked with director Peter Jackson on The Lord of the Rings trilogy. They founded their gaming division eight years ago and now look to jump back into the universe they helped create on the big screen.
The press release notes that the team is developing a “new game set in the Middle-earth of J.R.R. Tolkien,” in collaboration with Middle-earth Enterprises who licensed the literary works of Tolkien’s series to Weta Workshop as they take on the task of accessing “the broadest creative license to interpret the underlying lore of the books.”
Private Division head Michael Worosz shared their excitement in partnering with Weta Workshop, saying:
“We are thrilled to partner with Wētā Workshop to publish a game set in such an extraordinary and celebrated universe. The Lord of the Rings IP is home to so many remarkable stories, and no entity is better equipped than the team at Wētā Workshop to create a distinctive, new Middle-earth gaming experience.”
Weta Workshop gaming lead Amie Wolken noted that it is a privilege to create a game set in the prominent universe of Middle-earth and all the while having the chance to let players explore Middle-earth in a brand new way, saying:
“As a fan ourselves, we’re excited for gamers to explore Middle-earth in a way they never have before, and introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.”
The untitled Lord of the Rings game is still in early development but fans can expect more information including a title and release date in the future. Currently expected to launch sometime during Take-Two Interactive‘s Fiscal Year 2024 which runs from April 2023 to March 2024.
