Netflix Developing Gears of War Film and Animated Series Adaptations
Netflix has announced that they will be developing a feature film and animated series adaptation of the hit video game franchise Gears of War. The road to adapting the post-apocalyptic shooter has been one that has gone on for years as multiple attempts at adapting the video game series have come and gone. The streamer announced a partnership with The Coalition, the studio behind the video game franchise.
The streamer and studio behind the video game franchise will team up for a feature film adaptation that will be followed up by an adult animated series with the potential of additional projects in the future. No production or filmmakers were mentioned or are attached to the upcoming project but they are looking to adapt Gears of War from the ground up as there have been multiple failed attempts in the past. The announcement comes as the video game series celebrates 16 years since it launched in 2006.
The Xbox-exclusive line of video games put the console on the map with the explosive launch and introduction of the protagonist Marcus Phoenix who leads humanity’s stand again the Locust Horde in the third-person shooter. The video game also celebrated a long reign as one of the most competitive and popular multiplayer games. The plot of the series follows Phoenix and the human race launching one last counteroffensive as they send out the Phoenix-led Delta Squad.
The long uphill battle for an on-screen adaptation has seen the likes of New Line Pictures attempting to adapt Gears of War just one year after the release of the first title and after acquiring the rights, the project never saw the light of day. Fast forward to 2009, producer Wyck Godfrey and director Len Wiseman were working on a script but again, the film never made it further. Universal Pictures was the most recent contender to step up to the plate as they brought on screenwriter Shane Salerno to write a script but to no avail.
Stay tuned as Netflix unveils more information on what we hope will be the Gears of War project to see the light of day.
