The Girls on the Bus: Melissa Benoist Joins Political Drama Series
HBO Max has announced that Melissa Benoist has been cast in the upcoming political drama series The Girls on the Bus. Benoist joins the series on the heels of the announcement that her banner Three Rings Production has renewed its overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group. Benoist’s casting in the series has been circling the rumor mill since February but has now been officially confirmed.
The Girls on the Bus‘ description reads:
“Four female journalists who follow the every move of a parade of flawed presidential candidates, finding friendship, love, and a scandal that could take down not just the presidency but our entire democracy along the way.”
The series is inspired by Amy Chozick‘s chapter in the novel Chasing Hillary and will center on Benoist’s character who after romanticizing Timothy Crouse‘s Boys on the Bus, heads on the campaign trail to cover a presidential campaign and befriends three other journalists and they bond over the campaign. The series will be executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Rina Mimoun who also serves as series showrunner. The series was written by Chozick and Julie Plec who also executive produce with Benoist producing on the series.
Benoist is known for her role in the musical series Glee and also played the DC character Kara Danvers/Supergirl in The CW series Supergirl which ran for six seasons and also took part in many crossover episodes in The CW‘s Arrowverse series that was made up of Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash.
