Mel Gibson In Talks To Direct LETHAL WEAPON 5
Well, it seems like Gibson was telling the truth when his character Riggs said “We’re not too old for this S*%T. Mel Gibson is in talks to direct the next installment of the Lethal Weapon franchise, Lethal Weapon 5. During an interview in London, Gibson said that he is in fact looking to direct and star in the film, but a deal remains to be officially made.
Gibson played the iconic role of mentally unstable and loose cannon police detective Martin Riggs who gets partnered up with the straight edge, by the book Roger Murtaugh played by Danny Glover. The pair inevitably create an unbreakable bond and in the latest entry in the film franchise, we saw Riggs and Murtaugh struggle with age as they seemingly don’t have the same young energy they used to have and gusto for the job.
Gibson would be taking the helm from the previous director Richard Donner who just recently passed away this year. Donner had been working on another sequel and as of 2020 he had plans to direct the fifth and final film, telling the Daily Telegraph:
“This is the final one. It’s both my privilege and duty to put it to bed. It’s exciting, actually… Hahaha! It’s the last one, I’ll promise you that.”
Gibson continued developing the sequel after Donner passed and this new sequel would be made for an HBO Max release. We don’t have information on any returning or new cast members or if original screenwriter Shane Black would return to pen the script. With Gibson recently joining The Continental series over at STARZ, it’s unsure where in his schedule this project sits. Regardless of how far off it may be, I would love to see Riggs return, and even better would be to see Murtaugh return even in a supporting role. You can check out the entire Lethal Weapon franchise on HBO Max now.
