Horizon Zero Dawn Live-Action Adaptation Coming From Netflix and The Umbrella Academy Showrunner
Netflix and The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman are set to develop a live-action adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn. Blackman recently signed a multi-year deal with the streamer that also includes a new series in the works set on the International Space Station titled Orbital.
The hit open-world video game series takes players into a world on the brink of extinction as a result of technological advancement. In the game, humanity has reunited to form new communities but with the knowledge of times before long gone, the new communities live in a tribal setting. The world is also inhabited by machines that inhabit the world as animals of different sizes leading to other threats for the humans that remain.
The live-action series will most likely follow the video game’s main protagonist Aloy who is a warrior in her tribe and stumbles across humanity’s past knowledge. The series will have its work cut out for them as the video game is beloved and praised for the unique concept and stunning landscapes Guerrilla Games brought to players along with incredible designs within the post-apocalyptic world.
The world and story of Horizon are a good fit for the long-form storytelling of a series as it will open up doors to expand past the premise of the video game while also giving Blackman room to adapt the universe without rushing. Blackman has done wonders for the series adaptation of the comic book series The Umbrella Academy which has been a hit on Netflix with Blackman’s exciting take on the comic series that has seemingly surpassed the comic series to some fan’s opinions.
Blackman shared their excitement to work with Netflix on the two projects, saying:
“‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ and ‘Orbital’ are elevated, event-level projects grounded in characters that fans will love and relate to, which are hallmarks of Irish Cowboy productions. We’re thrilled to be working with Netflix and all of our partners on developing these ground-breaking stories.”
Horizon Zero Dawn will be executive produced by Blackman, Michelle Lovretta, Abbey Morris, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Jan-Bart van Beek, Ben McCaw, Roy Lee, and Matthew Ball.
Orbital was created by David Lynch and Keith Lynch who will serve as co-creators alongside Blackman who also executive produced the series alongside Dan Lin, Nick Reynolds, Jonathan Eirich, Ed Barratt, and Richard Wylie.
Horizon Zero Dawn and Orbital both find themselves in early stages of development and do not have a release window. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
