Gunn and Safran Have Completed Their DC Master Plan, Henry Cavill Not Returning as Superman
DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have finally completed their master plan for the DCEU. For the most part, it seems. They plan to reveal more in 2023 but one project that was revealed is a Young Superman movie. Part of this plan, which won’t be an origin film, will have Gunn penning the script, and the unfortunate news to come of this is the confirmation that Henry Cavill will not be returning as Superman. The news from Gunn showed promise as they also noted that there may be future possibilities for Cavill in the future.
The news was confirmed by both Gunn and Cavill on social media. Check out their statements below:
Gunk’s statement reads:
“Peter and I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.
“Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
Cavill’s statement reads:
“ I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
Deadline reported that sources are Saying that Gunn and Safran are in talks with Ben Affleck to helm a future DC film. Affleck is still set to reprise his role as Batman in The Flash which releases on June 16, 2023. This follows the news of the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 after Patty Jenkins’s script was told it didn’t align with their long-term plans.
We’ve lost Cavill as Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher and now we see a DC Universe where Cavill’s Superman likely will not be seen again. The shake-ups continue and it’s disappointing to see two of the bright spots of the Snyderverse exit the DCEU’s future but stay tuned as Gunn and Safran pave the way for a new DC Universe and if Gunn’s tweet shows, there’s room for Cavill in that future as possibly another character or his return as Clark Kent.
