HBO Max Cancels Los Espookys After Two Seasons
HBO Max has announced that the bilingual comedy series Los Expookys has been canceled after two seasons at the streamer. Deadline reported that the streamer chose to not move forward with the series following a disappointing second season which brought in viewership below the minimum requirement by the streamer to keep it on the platform.
The series followed a group of friends who used their extensive knowledge of the horror genre to create made-up horror film situations in hopes of tricking their audience and monetizing their passion for horror. The series was hit during its premiere in 2019 but after a hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, the series returned this year to a lackluster viewership which shows the series was undoubtedly affected by the long hiatus.
HBO released a statement in which they praise the series and welcome the opportunity to work with the cast and creators in the future, writing:
“We are thrilled we could deliver the unique and hilarious second season of Los Espookys to viewers finally, more than three years after the series premiere, due to pandemic delays. We thank Julio, Ana, and Fred for this imaginative and delightfully bizarre world they created. We are not currently planning on a third season, but we would welcome the opportunity to work with this cast and crew in the future.”
The series was co-created by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen. The thee also starred in the series alongside José Pablo Minor, River L. Ramirez, Giannina Fruttero, Carmen Gloria Bresky, Eudora Peterson, Greta Titelman, Spike Einbinder, Sam Taggart, Kim Petras, Isabella Rosellini, and Yalitza Aparicio.
The series was executive produced by Armisen, Fabrega, and Torres alongside Lorne Michaels, Alice Mathia, and Andrew Singer. The screenplay was written by the series creators in collaboration with Bernardo Britto and Mara Vargas Jackson. Sharon Lopez and Andy Garland co-produced the series. The series was praised by critics and fans and although the pandemic seems to have halted any chances of a third season, with HBO‘s statement, there’s a good indication we will see the creative minds behind the series on the platform sooner rather than later.

You can check out seasons 1 and 2 of Los Espookys on HBO Max.
