First Image for Joker 2 Released as Sequel Begins Filming

Todd Phillips has recently begun filming on Joker 2, officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux. The director took to social media to show fans their first image of the highly-anticipated sequel which stars Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as the Clown Prince of Crime. The image was captioned by Phillips with “Day 1. Our Boy. #Joker.”

The film is set to see Lady Gaga join the upcoming film in the role of Harley Quinn. Those who have partaken in the madness that the first film brought know that this is a different take on the famous DC characters and it will be interesting to see what Phillips brings to Harley’s vision.

The title is also another interesting bit that should be noted as the term folie à deux refers to a madness shared by two and given the state we see Arthur Fleck in the first image, could it be possible that his being locked up, and broken state of mind along with the musical aspect we know the film will entail all points to the madness unraveling in Fleck’s head throughout the film?

It could also be a re-imagining of sorts as Fleck could possibly influence Gaga’s Harley Quinn who could possibly be a psychiatrist within Arkham Asylum, where the film will take place and he finds himself imprisoned. Too much is unknown and leads to many interesting possibilities but the first image shows Fleck getting cleaned up and a gruesome look at his malnourished body.

We know the film will continue to deliver its dark and gritty descent into the mind of Phoenix’s Joker and if the original film was any indicator of the response the sequel might receive, we are in for one hell of a ride. The 2019 film won over critics and audiences since its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and went on to gross over $1B dollars with 11 Academy Award nominations. It will be a treat to continue to piece together the mysterious and dark descent of Fleck as we get more information on the film.

Joker: Folie À Deux will release in theaters on October 4, 2024.
