Death Stranding Film Adaptation in the Works from Hideo Kojima
The acclaimed and beloved post-apocalyptic video game Death Stranding is getting a feature film adaptation from Hideo Kojima. The iconic video game director behind the Metal Gear series will have Kojima Productions partnering with Alex Lebovici‘s Hammerstone Studios. Kojima has a long history working in the video game industry and will for the first time, take his talents to film.
This will not be a direct adaptation of the story we played in the game as it has been confirmed that the plan is to introduce new characters and elements within the world of Death Stranding in the new film but plot details are still being kept under wraps for now. The studios are not wasting time though as they have begun development.
Lebovici, who executive produce Barbarian, shared his excitement to partner with Kojima on his first film adaptation, saying:
“We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation,” said Lebovici. “Unlike other big-budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic “Hideo Kojima” production.”
Kojima also shared a statement, saying:
“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios. This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing Death Stranding to the big screen.”
Death Stranding first found life on the PlayStation 4 where the game featured a protagonist with the voice and likeness of Norman Reedus who lives in a world that is left fractured by a cataclysmic event which is known as you guessed it, “Death Stranding.” This event sees the world of the living and the afterlife colliding and opening a doorway between the living and the dead. This leaves an opening for creatures of the afterlife to come into our physical world and this is where Reedus’ Sam Porter’s story begins as he travels delivering goods across this land.

No release window was given for the Death Stranding film but as you prepare to enter the complicated world of the video game, check out the game and experience the world for yourself firsthand.
