Geek Network Top 10: Best Movies of 2022

I can’t remember a year where the lineup at the end of the year was so stacked. It has been this way across all mediums but in the film category, we were treated to many great films across all genres. As a fan of horror, this was truly a year for us with many top films worthy of being on this list.

From highly anticipated sequels, both ones we were expecting and some that emerged years after the original, the films still managed to knock it out of the park. We also saw Brendan Fraser return to the spotlight which undeservedly had avoided him for so long to deliver an Oscar-worthy performance alongside rising star Sadie Sink along with more entries in the Marvel and DC universe.

Check out our top films of 2022 below:

10. Where the Crawdads Sing

This coming-of-age story of a young girl raised in the marshlands of the south in the 50s was a surprisingly great film that kept us on the edge of our seats. Novel adaptations, much like all adaptations always seem to divide audiences. This film was no different but in our experience, it delivered a beautiful and touching adaptation that is not overly complicated but brings an intriguing vibe that keeps the viewer invested through and through.

Obtaining a completely perfect adaptation is nearly impossible but director Olivia Newman honored the work of Delia Owens and provided fans of the novel with an adaptation that respected the source material and included a cast led by Daisy Edgar-Jones that brought to life the characters of the novel that was true to the vision we painted as we read the novel cover to cover. The unlikely possibility of this film capturing us the way it did, landed it on our list.

9. Scream

We had not seen Ghostface emerge in over a decade since Scream 4 was released in 2011. The news of Scream 5 was one that brought excitement to us as it stands as one of our favorite franchises. The excitement of hearing directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett express their love for the franchise and the blend of new faces with returning legacy characters and final girl Neve Campbell was an electrifying campaign for the film leading up to its release.

Set 25 years after we first saw the brutal murders in Woodsboro, we see Ghostface return with new targets in sight. The blend of new and familiar faces made the film feel fresh and familiar all at once and even as Scream continues to pave its own path and make its own rules as each sequel comes, the essence of what makes these films some of the most successful slasher films continues to be the consistent formula driving this franchise.

The suspense, the dread, and the constant guessing game of who is behind the mask is the same game we have been playing since the original film premiered in 1996 but it never gets tiresome. With Scream 6 already on the way, we cannot wait to see what we experience when Ghostface returns in New York City.

8.  Bullet Train

Bullet Train was criminally not talked about enough. The spy vs. spy formula that pits assassins against one another on a fast-moving bullet train was an insanely fun film that gave us fascinating characters, and exhilarating action, all bound up in a humorous 126-minute film that was incredibly fun to experience. Each character provided their backstory and all came from the same life of an assassin, some of these characters had either crossed paths before or had a reputation that preceded them.

The ensemble cast propelled this film with impeccable chemistry mostly between brothers Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry whose banter and continuous labeling of their suspects to Thomas the Train characters was always a wonderful comedic relief between the action and mystery of the film.

7. Prey

Amber Midthunder leads a cast featuring skilled warriors in a Comanche Nation who end up going toe-to-toe with the alien killer himself. The film being set before the previous films provided a deadly cat-and-mouse game between the Comanche warriors and one of the first highly-evolved Predators to make their way to our planet. The film provided us with a revitalization of the Predator franchise after its previous entries failed to stand out and some fell completely short.

Taking the film back 300 years was a creative change of scenery that gave the film a feel more akin to the original where technology and modern weapons were all but obsolete and gave us a film of warriors taking on a threat, unlike anything they have seen with their skills being their greatest weapon. We got a truly suspenseful film that relied on the atmosphere and the animalistic hunt that takes place, but this time around, the Prey fought back and with it brings hope for a new slate of Predator films in the future for fans.

6. Nope

Jordan Peele strikes again. After giving us the mind-bending films Get Out and Us, Peele brought us an other-worldly film that surprisingly felt more grounded than his previous entries. Following ranch-owning siblings, O and Emeral played by Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer find themselves caught in a web of attempting to document a UFO. With the help of a tech salesman and documentarian, the film delivers a fun and original sci-fi experience that is equally as terrifying.

In true Peele form, the film doesn’t commit to a genre but even touching on many, Peele does what he does best by honoring the blended genres the best way he knows how by pushing boundaries. The layers within the film give it a slower burn that will require viewers to fully commit to the entirety of the story and the curveballs that Peele throws at us while emulating our insatiable desire of recording proof of otherworldly life and the commercialization of these things all packed into a brilliantly conceived concept propelled by the stellar cast and their performances.

5. The Batman

The Batman was surrounded with skepticism all the way up to its release. I still remember the headlines questioning Heath Ledger‘s casting as the Joker in The Dark Knight and the same fate fell upon Robert Pattinson whose great performances seem to always be foreshadowed by his famous role in the Twilight saga. Pattinson proved naysayers wrong by delivering one of our favorite Batman performances to date.

Matt Reeves gave us an alternate universe as Batman takes on the Riddler who is a sadistic serial killer in a gritty and dark detective film that many fans of the comic book character had been hoping to get for years. Pattinson could by far be the most violent Batman we have gotten and it led to phenomenal supporting performances with Paul Dano delivering a broken and unhinged version of the Riddler, Colin Farrell providing us with a gangster-style Penguin whose performance earned him a spinoff series, and even the short cameo of Barry Keoghan‘s Joker that quite possibly is our best looking live-action Joker since Ledger.

4. The Whale

I think we can all agree that Brendan Fraser is and forever will be a national treasure. He has been back on the small screen for quite some time now with his role in DC‘s Doom Patrol and this year we finally saw his return to the big screen in The Whale. The film is packed with emotion and follows an English teacher trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter while dealing with an eating addiction as a coping mechanism for his grief.

The film’s sorrow will be profound for viewers and while the film itself might feel repetitive, the cast, tone, and story being portrayed by these phenomenal performances push the film to an award-worthy experience that even earned Fraser a six-minute standing ovation when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

3. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Holding the second biggest opening of the year, the film had an emotional campaign leading to its premiere with the sudden loss of Chadwick Boseman. One of the reasons the film lands so highly on our list is the respect given to what Boseman did for the character by honoring him not only in the film’s campaign but also in the film itself.

We all knew Black Panther had to live on even with Boseman gone but the film gave us a very emotional journey that showed the equal measure T’Challa’s loss left in the MCU just as fans all around the world felt with the loss of Boseman. It was an honorable passing of the torch which was necessary for the expansive Marvel universe but it was not without thanking both Boseman and the character he proudly portrayed for years as we all geared witness to an impactful closing of Marvel’s Phase 4.

2. Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise returned to his iconic role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell 36 years after the original embedded ‘Danger Zone’ into our brains forever. The fast-paced film returns with equal glory as Maverick finds himself back at Top Gun with the next generation of fighters who he must choose and prepare for a mission they’re likely to not return from.

The film returns to top form as even the modernized world doesn’t keep the film from delivering the nostalgic jolt of excitement to see the returning cast along with the new faces from some of our favorite actors today. The inclusion of Val Kilmer’s “Ice Man” in a clever way was great to experience and seeing Kilmer honored in the sequel made the experience even more worthwhile. Any fan of the original will find themselves right at home in what was one of the best films of this year. The film earned over 1B at the box office and along with the endless praise revitalized the faith in the theatre experience once again.

1. The Black Phone

The Black Phone served as a dark and twisted adaptation of the short story by Joe Hill. After a young 13-year-old boy is abducted by a sadistic killer who keeps him captive in a basement. The film is nuanced by supernatural elements that take us deeper into the feeling of dread we already found ourselves in with the initial buildup. Ethan Hawke was a menacing character in this film and has really elevated his portrayal of an antagonist after his role in this film and Marvel’s Moon Knight.

The chemistry among the cast, especially Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw was believable and relatable, the film delivered a captivating and engaging story that made the one hour and forty-five-minute runtime of the film feel like a fleeting nightmare that we suddenly awoke from. The best thing the film had going for it is that it was actually terrifying which is something that the horror genre tends to hit or miss nowadays and with that, the film landed itself as our favorite of the year.
