Avengers #1: MacKay and Villa Take Reigns of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes this May

Marvel Comics has announced the new creative team taking the reins of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes starting with Avengers #1 this May. Superstar writer Jed MacKay teams up with Stormbreaker artist C.F. Villa to deliver readers a new groundbreaking run in time for the superhero teams’ 60th anniversary and picking up after Jason Aaron’s iconic run of Avengers currently concluding within the pages of the crossover event Avengers Assemble. 

Marvel’s description of Avengers reads: 

“Readers will be introduced to an all-new Avengers lineup led by Captain Marvel that includes Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, and Vision. This team of some of Marvel’s greatest icons will assemble when they’re gifted with knowledge of THE TRIBULATION EVENTS, a series of grand-scale disasters that will spark upheaval throughout the known universe…

…The Star. The Icon. The Witch. The Construct. The God. The Engineer. The King.”

The world is ever in peril, and a new team of Avengers mobilizes to meet any dangers that dare threaten the planet. But when Terminus attacks, a new and insidious danger rears its head: one that the Avengers know all too well, and one that comes to them in the most dangerous of guises – that of a friend.”

The series will also mark the return of influential artist Stuart Immonen who returns to Marvel to deliver a series of covers for the series. Readers already got a tease of MacKay’s grand scope in last year’s Timeless. The one-shot issue saw Kang go into conflict with the Twilight Court  led by Myrddin. Searching for the “Missing Moment” sees the Avengers become involved and take on the Tribulation Events that will either be another triumph for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes or see them become pawns in a scheme beyond their understanding. 

The new lineup of Avengers will be tested in many ways, that will leave them no choice but to rise to the occasion and prove they are THE powerful force in the Marvel Universe we believe them to be.  

MacKay shares his excitement to take on the next chapter of the Avengers alongside Villa, saying: 

“I’m extremely excited to be launching the latest chapter of AVENGERS with my old Black Catteammate C.F. Villa! I grew up on the Avengers, weaving in and out of their 60s and 70s exploits as a kid, and having the opportunity to plot the course of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is a rush, especially coming from the street-level and/or weirdo niche I’ve been working in over the last couple of years. 

This is big, loud Avengers stuff—nothing in this story should ever feel small or inconsequential, and our lineup reflects that. Heavy hitters and iconic Avengers are to the fore—The Tribulation Events are coming, and only the Avengers can take them on.”
