A New Princess Diaries Film Is In Development
It seems as if there is still more story to tell long after we last princess waved alongside Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) as The Hollywood Reporter has released a report stating that a new Princess Diaries film is in development. The film is still regarded as a classic coming-of-age story as we saw the film adaptations of Meg Cabot‘s novels turn an awkward teen into a full-fledged princess through the transformative princess training at the hands of her grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews).
It’s been almost two decades since the release of the sequel The Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement that saw Hathaway and Andrews reprise their roles. No word on whether either will return but THR’s report notes that a script is currently being written by Aadrita Mukerji (Reacher). A return to the role is not completely out of the question as Hathaway previously made headlines when she revealed during an interview with ET that a return for a threequel is more than possible, saying:
“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it. If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”
What are your thoughts on Princess Diaries 3? Would it work without the involvement of Hathaway and Andrews? Either way, the film is definitely at the top of the yearly rewatch list and the potential of a sequel, especially with Hathaway and Andrews on board, would make for a sure-fire hit.
