Here’s the official synopsis for Season 4 of Virgin River:
“Despite not knowing whether her baby belongs to her deceased husband, Mark or Jack, Mel begins Season Four with a sense of optimism. For years she yearned to be a mother and her dream is one step closer to reality. While Jack is supportive and excited, the question of paternity continues to gnaw at him. Complicating matters is the arrival of a handsome new doctor, who’s in the market to start a family of his own.
Hope is still healing from her car accident, and the lingering psychological effects of her brain injury will have profound consequences for both her and Doc. Brie, intent on proving the innocence of the man she loves, unexpectedly finds herself in a closer relationship with Mike and one step closer to Calvin’s violent criminal web. Even as Preacher forges a new romantic connection, he can’t help but hold out hope for being reunited with Christopher and Paige.”
The new season kicks off right where we were left in the cliffhanger finale of season 3 as the romantic relationship between Melinda (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) hits quite an emotional speedbump after Mel realizes she is pregnant but is uncertain if Jack or her deceased husband Mark (Daniel Gillies) is the father. As we touch on all the comings and goings of the residents of the small California town, we see Preacher (Colin Lawrence) continue on his search for Christopher (Chase Petriw) who had been kidnapped in the previous season’s finale by Vince (Ian Tracey).
Hope (Annette O’Toole) is featured in the new season once again after her character was severely absent in season 3. O’Toole’s character Hope was featured in scenes of season 3 through video calls due to the actress being part of an at-risk group during the COVID-19 pandemic. After Hope’s accident, we see Doc Mullins (Tim Matheson) caring for Hope after the car accident she suffered last season while the new doctor in town, Cameron (Mark Ghanimé) adjusts to the clinic.

The series finds its magic and charm once again by delivering an emotional over-the-top plot as has become custom with the series but keeps itself grounded and avoids veering into a cheesy soap opera feel. This season, in particular, gave us a cliffhanger ending for what felt to be every episode and I am sure many fans as did I will find themselves 5 episodes in within a blink of an eye.
A major part of that is the first quarter of the season doesn’t address many of the questions I am sure many of us went in hoping to get answers for, this is not a bad thing but if you are as impatient as I am, you will find yourself more than halfway through the series on the mere notion of wanting to have all of your questions answered.
Based on a series of novels by Robyn Carr, Virgin River was created by Sue Tenney. The series also stars Jenny Cooper, Lauren Hammersley, Benjamin Hollingsworth, and Zibby Allen. Virgin River has also already gotten a season 5 renewal which many fans will be happy to see after they plummet into the drama and romance of season 4.
Virgin River continues to deliver the small-town charm that many people would get from coming across a small magical town such as this. That is a rare experience to deliver to fans on the small screen and does not lose one step as it continues to provide delightful drama as it explores the residents of this town. While doing so, the series manages to keep the heart of the show beating through the ups and downs that our favorite town couple Mel and Jack seem to find themselves in.
I will warn you of this, this might be the biggest finale of any of its previous seasons with the potential to change everything, so as we wait for season 5 to arrive next year, maybe try to do your best to watch this at a pace. We couldn’t but we hope you can. A near-perfect season is added to the perfect little town of Virgin River.
